Our Current Hospital Discharge Fund
Our media has been full of reports of over-burdened hospitals trying to deal with the seasonal increase in demand for their services. Locally, the Cumberland Infirmary has been feeling similar pressures with a constant demand for beds. Sometimes the simplest issues – like not being able to cook for themselves - delays patient discharges and keeps them on a ward longer than ideal.
At Meals on Wheels Cumbria, we take the matter of care at home very seriously. We recognize that the transition home can be a challenging period. The process of recuperation does not end at the hospital doors, and often, patients require additional support to regain their health and independence fully. Through the Hospital Discharge Fund, we can provide hot food delivered by our volunteers to the door of someone newly released from hospital - providing care for those recovering and supporting our local hospital by releasing vital beds.

The Plan
In addition to the 200 meals per day we provide to residents in Carlisle, Brampton, Wigton and Penrith, we are proposing to provide 7 lunchtime meals – free of charge – to those leaving hospital who are referred to us by care services. This small token of help can make the difference between being in hospital or being at home for a number of precious days. The cost per person would be £40.60, and this includes food, transport and admin costs. We would hope to support up to 30 people per month at a crucial time in their recovery and hopefully free beds in hospital.
How Your Contribution Makes a Difference
- Provide Nutritious Meals Each meal provided through the fund is carefully planned and is freshly cooked each day. Your donation will help cover the costs of ingredients, preparation, and delivery, ensuring that patients receive high-quality nourishment.
- Reduce Readmission Rates Proper nutrition is linked to lower readmission rates. By supporting patients with healthy meals, we can help prevent complications that might otherwise lead to a return to the hospital. This not only improves the quality of life for the patient but also reduces the strain on our healthcare system.
- Foster Community Well-Being Supporting the Hospital Discharge Fund is an investment in the health and well-being of our community. When we come together to care for our most vulnerable members, we strengthen the fabric of our society. Your business will be recognised as a leader in community care, demonstrating a commitment to making a positive difference.
Ways to Contribute
We have made it easy for businesses to contribute to the Hospital Meal Fund. Here are several
ways you can get involved:
ways you can get involved:
- Monetary Donations Financial contributions are the most direct way to support our efforts. A donation of £406.00 would provide ten people with help at a crucial time in their recovery and hopefully free up beds in hospital. Our initial appeal target is £10,000 - which would give us up to eight months of provision. Donations can be made as a one-time gift or as a recurring monthly commitment.
- Employee Volunteer Programs Encourage your employees to volunteer their time to help with deliveries. This not only supports the fund but also fosters a sense of community and teamwork.
- Sponsorship Opportunities We offer various sponsorship opportunities. Sponsors will be acknowledged on our website, in our newsletters, and at community events, showcasing your commitment to community health.
Now, more than ever, we need your support. To make a donation or learn more about how you can get involved, please contact Rachael de la Mare at [email protected]. The Hospital Discharge Fund is a lifeline for those in recovery, and with your help, we can ensure that no one goes hungry as they heal. Your generosity will bring comfort, nourishment, and hope to those in need.
